Mont Saint-Michel sits roughly 360 km west of Paris, on the border between Normandy and Brittany. There is no direct train to the Mount, so most visitors weigh three options: train plus bus, a group coach tour, or a private van. Here is how they compare.

Option 1: Train and bus

The usual rail route is a TGV from Paris Montparnasse to Rennes, followed by a connecting bus to the Mount. Once you add the connection, plan on roughly four to five hours each way, and check current timetables before booking, because bus and train times do not always line up. A same-day return is possible but leaves little time on site.

Option 2: Group coach tour

Organized day tours leave from Paris and handle the transport for you. They tend to start very early and return late in the evening, with a fixed amount of time at the Mount and a set itinerary. It is a straightforward choice if you do not mind the schedule being decided for you.

Option 3: Private van with driver

By road, the trip takes about three and a half to four hours each way. A private van picks you up at your hotel, lets you choose the departure time, and can stop where you want along the way. It also lets you decide how long to stay at the Mount, for example to catch the late-afternoon light instead of the midday crowds. Our Mont Saint-Michel day takes about 12 hours and starts from €750 for the whole group, and our vans seat from 6 up to 12 passengers.

A tip on timing

The Mount is busiest around midday in high season, so arriving early or staying into the late afternoon makes the visit calmer. The bay has large tides, so it is worth checking the tide timetable before you pick your date if seeing the water around the Mount matters to you.

In Short

The train is the budget option but a long one. A private van costs more per person on paper, yet for groups it removes connections, fixed schedules and luggage handling, and gives you control over how long you stay at the Mount.
