Many visitors ask for a day trip from Paris to Normandy and Mont Saint-Michel in one go. On paper it looks close, but the D-Day beaches and the Mount sit at opposite ends of the region, so squeezing both into a single day leaves little time at either. Two days with one night on the way is far more comfortable, and a private van with driver makes the route simple.
The route at a glance
- Paris to Bayeux: about 270 km, roughly three hours by road.
- Bayeux to Mont Saint-Michel: about 125 km, roughly an hour and a half to two hours.
- Mont Saint-Michel back to Paris: about 360 km, three and a half to four hours.
- These times depend on traffic and stops, so keep a margin, especially on Friday and Sunday evenings.
Day 1: Paris, the D-Day beaches and Bayeux
Leave your hotel early. The first stop is usually the American Cemetery at Colleville-sur-Mer and Omaha Beach, followed by Pointe du Hoc and Arromanches, where the remains of the artificial harbour are still visible at low tide. In the late afternoon, Bayeux is a pleasant place to stop for the night, with its medieval centre and the famous tapestry. Our separate guide to the D-Day beaches day trip lists the sites in more detail.
A guide or a good audio guide helps here: the sites are moving and spread out, and a private driver lets you stay longer where it matters to your group.
The night: Bayeux or near the bay
Sleeping in Bayeux keeps the first day relaxed and puts you less than two hours from the Mount the next morning. If you would rather wake up near the bay itself, you can instead drive on to the Mont Saint-Michel area in the evening. Hotels near the Mount fill up early in high season, so book your rooms before fixing the dates of the trip.
Day 2: Mont Saint-Michel early, then back to Paris
Arriving at the start of the morning gives you the Mount before the crowds, which usually build up around midday. Climb the main street to the abbey, then leave time to walk along the ramparts and look at the bay. Check the tide calendar before choosing your dates: on the largest tides the water reaches the foot of the Mount, which is spectacular but changes how you walk and take photographs.
The drive back to Paris takes three and a half to four hours, so plan to leave by early afternoon if you want to be in the city for dinner. Our Mont Saint-Michel day trip guide and the comparison of train versus private van cover the one-day option.
Why a private van works for this route
- No connections: the train does not reach the Mount directly, and Normandy sites such as the D-Day beaches are hard to link by public transport.
- One plan for the whole group: the driver follows your schedule and adapts the departure and return to the tides and your pace.
- Room for luggage: a single vehicle carries the bags for the night, and we have vans for 7, 8 and up to 25 passengers.
What to book in advance
- Your hotel in Bayeux or near the bay, as early as possible.
- Guided visits or tickets for the sites that require them, such as the abbey, depending on the season.
- Dinner on the first evening if you travel on a weekend or during school holidays.

Normandy and Mont Saint-Michel work best over two days: the D-Day beaches and Bayeux first, a night on the way, then the Mount early the next morning. A private van with driver removes the connections and adapts to the tides.
